Lisa Ray

 
Lisa Ray acts as a young widow in Deepa Mehta's "Water", the third part of a trilogy. "Fire" and "Earth" were the first two.

"Water" is set in the Varanasi of early 1940s when Gandhiji's freedom struggle was infusing every Indian heart with the hope of a better morrow.

But for widows, such as Kalyani, played by Ray in the film, life seems to promise very little. Rather, it appears bleak.

"Water" ends on a tragic note, perhaps conveying that the dawn of a new nation would not quite mean the end of woe to many, widows in particular.
