Cannes 2006: India This 2006 May, Indian participation at the Cannes International Film Festival will be impressive. Writer and movie director Dev Benegal, film producer Sunil Doshi and student of Calcutta’s Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute Anirban Datta will lead the Indian team to Cannes. Their trips have been sponsored by the French Embassy in New Delhi. Datta will be the first Indian to take part in the Festival’s official Cinefondation Section, where he will show his work, “Tetris”. Bombay producer Doshi will screen Rajat Kapoor’s “Mixed Doubles” at Pavillion du Sud. Although “Mixed Doubles” will not be part of the Festival’s official lineup, Doshi hopes to attract crowds and meet potential international partners. Benegal will attend l’Atelier du Festival, where he will work on and present one of his works, “Road Movie”. “Being in charge of strengthening the Indo-French cooperation, I cannot be more happy for those three Indian talents”, said Mohamed Bendjebbour, Audiovisual Attaché at the French Embassy in New Delhi, India.“The participation of these three young men shows that Indian Cinema is going global and Cannes is the best platform in the world for that.” This year’s Indian presence in the Festival Market will also be very significant, thanks to the joint efforts of Market Director Jérôme Paillard and the Confederation of Indian Industry.
